PROCESS PAINTING, is different than the ART I create.
There is a space I dwell in when I’m creating both PROCESS PAINTINGS and ART . It’s a place of not knowing, of openness, a sacred space. From there I allow the colors, shapes and images to arise. They come spontaneously, without thinking. It’s quite mysterious to me, the way my paintings take shape. When I’m PROCESS PAINTING, I respect all that appears and don’t intentionally cover anything.
The beginning of my ART, like PROCESS PAINTING, is playful, adventurous, a time of risking, experimenting, exploring and pushing my own edges.
But, when I’m creating ART, I use a variety of tools: a stick, a screw driver, a paint brush, a trowel, my hands. Sometimes I use collage or apply scrapings or pieces of fabric. I cover what I don’t like. After many layers of paint have been laid down, I find myself at a threshold when a distinct shape emerges that I’m inordinately excited about. From there I move into an analytic space where I apply principles of value, design, and color. Then back to risking and spontaneity, and again I move into analyzing. This cycle frequently repeats itself several times.
I’m inspired by color, first and foremost. And stillness, expanse, tiny details and whimsy.
My interest is essentially the journey the process takes me on and my own curiosity in seeing how each individual painting develops, evolves and comes to completion.
